The Harvest of Souls Among the Harvest of Leaves

The sun has barely risen over the hills of West Bengal when Sonali begins plucking tea leaves. A  basket rests against her back. In her pocket, a small Audio Bible plays softly in Sadri — her heart  language.

For most of her life, reading Scripture was difficult. Formal education was limited, and long workdays left little room for study. When she tried to read the Bible, her understanding was  confined to what she could manage on the page.

“Reading limited my comprehension of the Scripture,” she explains. “Listening was when I began  to learn the Bible.”

Now the Word of God follows her into the fields.

“I listen to it while working. I’m not the only one listening. The people working around me begin to  listen and engage.”

Where carrying a printed Bible into the plantation would serve little purpose, the spoken Word  moves freely among the rows of tea bushes.

At home, her children gather to listen with her. Through hearing Scripture in their own language,  they came to faith and have since been baptized.

Among the steady rhythm of harvesting leaves, something else is taking root in West Bengal —  faith growing through a voice heard and understood.
